3 Ways to Prevent Termites
Here are three ways to prevent getting termites in your home.
South Carolina can be a hotbed for termites due to our climate, high moisture levels, and homes/decks with wood making direct contact with the ground. We made a video about a year ago about the moisture levels under your home if you have a crawl space. Higher moisture levels attract termites, so I suggest you go watch that video too. A quick tip: If you have a crawlspace, keep it well-ventilated and ensure no trapped air can cause moisture levels to build in the space.
However, if you have a crawl space or even if you own a slab home, your house is vulnerable to termites. The good news is that there are a number of effective steps you can take to avoid them:
1. Install gutters. Make sure your downspouts filter water away from your foundation, as that will help keep moisture away from the base of your home.
"If you have a crawl space or even if you own a slab home, your house is vulnerable to termites."
2. Keep mulch beds distanced. If you have a mulch bed or vegetation around your home, keep them at least 6 to 15 inches away from the house and keep them trimmed to maintain that distance. This gives the home space to breathe, keeps moisture at a minimum, and since mulch and vegetation are attractors for termites, they will not be so close to the house.
3. Use a licensed pest control company. Have a pest control company treat and monitor your home for termite activity; this is the best way to keep termites out of your home. They will either utilize bait stations around your home or use insecticide to protect your home against these pests.
There are three types of termites here in South Carolina, and the most common are subterranean termites. Since they live underground in colonies ranging from thousands to millions, they can quickly do plenty of damage. Subterranean termites travel from underground to aboveground through what is called a shelter tube, or mud tube. These tubes can be identified if you know what to look for; however, if you do not, a pest control company will be your best resource. Termites are a real issue here in Upstate South Carolina, and we want to ensure you are free of them and have peace of mind that you do not have these silent house-killers doing unknown damage to your home.
